Matt discovers fossils inside the cave

WHAT IS A FOSSIL?

Fossils often form when minerals in the surrounding soil and water slowly replace the body’s original chemicals and leave a stone replica of the original object or animal. Soft tissues rarely survive long after death, so most fossils are shells, teeth, and bones.

Other fossils are imprints left in soft mud or clay. Over time the surface may harden, but in Riverbluff Cave the clay containing the claw marks is still as moist and sticky as it was when the impressions were made.

Fossils teach us many things. The animal droppings in Riverbluff are especially interesting. Bear and peccary droppings reveal the creatures’ diets, including leaves, seeds, and pollen, that provide important clues about the soil, climate, and weather of that distant time.
